WRITERS BLOCK
HOW TO GET RID OF WRITERS BLOCK
We all struggle with it.
That overwhelming moment where we wonder, what next? And our minds write up a block, that Kermit the frog meme dressed in a black cloak saying just give up. To this I say don't worry! I have figured out a way to bust through that block like the koolaid man high on sugar.
Well, for this I thank my University of Toronto professor James who told us writer's block didn't exist and if we do experience it then just keep writing. I know you might be thinking, yeah ok James. Thanks for that. Writing will magically cure my writer's block, because that's exactly what I thought when he pronounced this to our lecture hall. But then I tried it.
The fascinating thing about writer's block is the fact it's a blank in your mind. What better way to fix that blank by filling it with ideas? So maybe James wasn't so far off. Maybe, he was a genuine who we just refused to listen to. So, here's a list of ways to cure writer's block by writing. The first thing I do is make a coffee or tea, because we all know coffee helps everything.
* Read a book of the same genre you're writing. When we're stuck, it sometimes help to read what other's have done in our genre. This can trigger our own ways of what we would have done different in such situations, or even inspire our writing.
*Brainstorm. For ten minutes just keep writing ideas. Force your mind to answer that what if question, without letting your pen or pencil or keyboard stop.
*Make a outline for where you want your story or writing piece to go. Let's be honest, we all think of the beginning and the end but never the process in between. So write down what you do know.
* Listen to music. This one I do more often than not, but listening to music influences your mood (So be careful with this one, listening to too much Taylor Swift will 100% ruin your romance book by influencing everyone to break up) and so listen to music while you write can help you write with passion and determination.
Finally, as James taught us, don't just give up. Keep writing anything, until you have something, or else you'll just keep having nothing. And nothing is no good.
Do you have your own ways of breaking writer's block?
